Collaboration with Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School Credited with Boosting Student Achievement
DANVERS, MA, Jan. 5, 2006 – RISO, Inc. announced today that its Boston area dealer, RISO Products of Boston, has received the Outstanding School Partner Award from the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) for collaborating with Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School on a program that has helped boost student achievement.
This award, presented at MASC’s annual joint conference with the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents (MASS), recognizes an organization that, through its contribution to public schools, has demonstrated support for public education.
RISO Products of Boston and Intel Corporation were selected by the MASC Board of Directors to receive the 2005 award.
The RISO Products of Boston and Whittier collaboration, which began in 2004, helps the school prepare all students for their MCAS tests. The project involves integration of RISO’s Assessment Solutions system with software called Test Vault¿ that enables teachers to administer practice tests using actual questions from previous MCAS exams, in the MCAS test format.
Assessment Solutions is an automated testing and evaluation tool that helps schools comply with the educational demands of the No Child Left Behind Act. Assessment Solutions combines specialized software that instantly grades and reports on any test, with a digital printing system that does everything from printing bubble sheets customized by the school to scanning and printing the results in seconds. By receiving instant feedback on student achievement, teachers can quickly identify areas where curriculum needs to be modified – for the entire class or individual student – in order to assist learning.
“We are proud to receive this prestigious award. Both Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School and RISO have a vision that revolves around using technology as an educational tool, particularly with regards to testing, evaluation and related instruction,” said Robert Raffa, Executive Vice President, RISO Products of Boston.
“Through RISO’s partnership efforts, continued support and willingness to work with us to create a product that meets current and future needs for student improvement, our faculty, students and school committee feel that this innovative use of technology has been a significant factor in school improvement and increases in our MCAS scores,” said Karen Sarkisian, Whittier’s Superintendent.
“Initially, Whittier was one of the lowest scoring schools in Massachusetts. We have made substantial gains that have brought us to meet and exceed state performance averages. The Assessment Solutions capability of providing instant data demonstrates a school and business partnership that created a tool for school improvement,” she added.
Whittier has also created a dedicated facility in the school called the RISO Learning Lab where the Test Vault and Assessment Solutions system reside and where remedial instruction takes place. The RISO/Whittier program is expected to serve as a model for other schools in Massachusetts.
